This section outlines the types of documentation documenters may collect in the context of human rights documentation. In addition, the section discusses considerations and best practices when conducting interviews or otherwise documenting information from victims and witnesses, as well as the how-tos and best practices of documenting a crime scene.
Forms of Documentation
This subsection provides an overview of the different types of documentation that may be collected in the context of human rights documentation, and best practices associated with each type of documentation. The three forms of documentation discussed are hardy copy documentation, digital information, and photographic and video images.
Documentation of Information from Victims and Witnesses
This section will review best practices on documenting information from victims and witnesses, including conduct during and after an interview. The section additionally discusses special considerations to keep in mind when documenting information on psychological injury and sexual and gender-based violence, or when interviewing specific groups such as minors, members of LGBTQ communities, and individuals with disabilities.
Documenting and Recording a Crime Scene
This subsection will review best practices for documenting and recording crime scenes. The section walks the documenter through how to secure a crime scene, how to document data collected from a crime scene, how to document data from human bodies, and lastly, how to document artifacts.
